It felt strange to see Zach get into her car and smile at her before putting on his seatbelt. She appreciated him offering to come along and share his expertise on bikes, but she hadnât really expected him to do so. It was something heâd mentioned only casuallyââOh, Iâll help you, if you like.â Sheâd never thought he actually would.
Edward had used to do that.
âIâll help you clear out that room. Donât want you throwing something important away.â Or, âI can go shopping with you if you like.â
But when the time came heâd always be too busy, or he would have made other plans, or heâd say he was too tired and he just wanted to relax and could they do it later?
âWhich shop are we going to?â asked Zach.
âI thought the one in Cherringham.â
âChrissieâs Bike Shop?â
âThatâs the one.â
âI know it well. I got mine from there.â
She began to drive through Greenbeck, past the village green, over the Wishing Bridge, and then up the hill that would take them past the castle. Cherringham wasnât far. About a fifteen-minute drive. And Chrissieâs Bike Shop sat in the centre of the small town, open that night until eight oâclock.
âAny news on Marvin?â she asked.
âYeah, looks like heâs developed quite an infection. Theyâve put him on intravenous antibiotics to help get rid of it.â
âPoor guy. And your foster father? Howâs he doing since his chemo?â
âYeah, good... Heâs had a couple of difficult days, but Evelyn said he was doing much better today.â
âThatâs good news. What are you doing with Rebel whilst youâre at work?â
He laughed. âCan you keep a secret?â
âOf course!â
âI brought him to work today. Settled him down in the old bike shelter behind the surgery, with a blanket, some toys and a bowl of water, and popped out in between patients to give him a quick cuddle and a toilet break.â
She laughed. âThatâs why I saw you out the back! For a minute there I thought I was going mad. But that was you in the woods?â
Zach grinned. âYes. Donât tell Lucy. Youâll get me in trouble.â
âHardly. Youâre the senior partner.â
âBut Lucyâs the practice manager and she used to be a nurseâyou never mess with a nurse.â
âYouâd better believe it!â She laughed with him, enjoying the fact that she was sharing his secret. âWas Rebel all right?â
âHe was fine! He was in the shade all day, and I took him food and snacks and toys...we had a walk. I think he enjoyed himself.â
âYou love having a dog, donât you?â she asked softly.
He nodded. âI do. I want Marvin to be better, but Iâm really not looking forward to handing that dog back when he is.â
âI get that...â
They drove on in companionable silence for a little while as the traffic got busier heading into Cherringham. They got stuck behind a learner driver for a while, who stalled the vehicle at traffic lights, but they were in no rush so neither of them was bothered.
After finding a parking space in the town centre, they began their short walk to the bike shop.
